Italy Bridge Operator Focus Of Anger As Collapse Death Toll Rises
On Wednesday, rescuers hunted for survivors among the wreckage from a bridge collapse in Genoa Tuesday. The 50-year-old bridge collapse has killed 39.
Rueters says furious government ministers rounded on the viaduct’s operator, Autostrade per l’Italia, saying it should pay fines and compensation and lose its concession.
The bridge, part of a toll motorway linking the port city of Genoa with southern France, collapsed during torrential rain on Tuesday. The collapse sent dozens of vehicles crashing onto a riverbed, a railway and two warehouses.
As cranes moved in to shift truck-sized chunks of broken concrete, hundreds of firefighters searched for survivors.
